THE BRIEF
Kingston upon Thames is a historic market town in South West London. The renowned market and hall are central to both the town’s identity and geography.
The ancient market dates back to the early 1200s, and is one of London’s oldest street markets. It’s currently home to 28 permanent stalls, 7 days a week. The grade II listed Market House is situated in the centre of the market was built in 1840 and served as the town’s hall for 105 years. The building is famed for its golden statue of Queen Anne and Italianate style.
Kingston’s residents have highlighted the need for a revitalised and exciting market to ensure it’s not overtaken by local competition. An ‘exciting long-term function’ for the market house was also seen as paramount for locals. In March 2024 Kingston Council published details online of the proposed regeneration of the market and market house.
OUR WORK
Shortly after the proposed regeneration was made public, we started our survey work in mid-March 2024. We offered a range of services including measured building surveys, topographical surveys and underground utility surveys.
From instruction, we had multiple teams on-site at any given time. The market runs daily from 10am to 5pm, and experiences a high level of footfall throughout these times. Due to this being a busy area, we had to be flexible with our visiting times. One of our underground utility teams was mainly utilised at night to minimise disruption, particularly to the market stalls.
Our measured building and topographical surveys were carried out throughout the day. As we were working on a functioning and busy site, our project management team were essential in the smooth running of the visits. This included liaising with the stall workers and arranging access to buildings and for vehicles. Level of detail (LOD) 3 models and elevations were provided for the market stalls and house, along with a 2d topographical drawing of the surrounding perimeters.
THE OUTCOME
The full surveying work was carried out in just three days and within the time allotted. All survey data was delivered to a satisfied customer. At the time of writing, the project is on track.
