CLAIRE FENWICK TAKES ON THE DUCHENNE DASH FOR DUCHENNE UK

April 25, 2024

On the 17th and 18th of May, our Managing Director, Claire Fenwick, will be taking on the gruelling Duchenne Dash to raise money for Duchenne UK.

We are asking for your support as Claire takes on this mammoth challenge for a more than worthwhile cause. You can donate here or through the link at the end of this article.

WHAT IS DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY?

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive condition diagnosed in childhood that causes all muscles in the body to gradually weaken. Currently, there is no cure for Duchenne. Duchenne UK is at the forefront of advancing treatments and care for everyone affected by the disease.

In the UK alone, two families a week receive news that their child has DMD. Duchenne UK was set up by two mothers whose sons were diagnosed with DMD in 2011. The money raised by Duchenne UK helps pay for an army of healthcare professionals, scientists, drug developers and families who’ve joined the fight to end Duchenne. In the last 13 years, Duchenne UK has achieved so much but there is still a long way to go.

1 in 3,500 males worldwide are affected by DMD with 20,000 children each year being born with DMD.

WHAT IS THE DUCHENNE DASH?

The Duchenne Dash is an annual signature cycling event organised by Duchenne UK, a charity that aims to raise awareness and funds for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. It is one of their most challenging fundraising events of the year, which involves cycling from London to Paris, covering a distance of approximately 300km in just 24 hours. Over the past ten years, the event has raised more than £5.5 million for DMD research.

The Duchenne Dash is an opportunity for individuals to cycle and socialise while making an impact. The event is held every year, and the participants are equipped with a detailed toolkit that prepares them for the challenge. The money raised through the event is used to fund research, DMD projects, and clinical trials aimed at finding a cure for the disease.

140 people took part in the dash in 2023, bringing together people across all walks of life under one united cause.

I’m sure you’ll join us in wishing Claire and the rest of the cyclists the best of luck on this amazing journey!
