THE BRIEF
Spatial Dimensions is proud to announce our involvement in the redevelopment of the iconic grade II listed BBC Maida Vale Studios in West London. This is a historic site synonymous with groundbreaking music and cultural heritage. Maida Vale Studios has been used to record thousands of classical music, popular music and drama sessions. This dates back to the BBC converting the building in 1934. In 2023, the studios were sold to a partnership of Working Title’s Tim Bevan & Eric Fellner, legendary composer Hans Zimmer and Steven Kofsky. They plan to create an outstanding venue for creative work.
The proposed scheme aims to blend the legacy of Maida Vale with the changing demands of today’s creative industries. This will provide a world-class facility that combines state-of-the-art music studios, with all elements of film post-production under one roof.
Our clients, MVS Partnership LLP, collaborated with an esteemed team of professionals. This included Portman LX, Stiff + Trevillion Architects, Arup, and TTP Consulting. This collective was tasked with envisioning a reimagined future for the studios. This vision must balance respect for its historic legacy with innovative modern design.
OUR WORK
Our team provided a comprehensive range of surveying services to aid in the transformation of this celebrated landmark. The challenge was to avoid disrupting a working recording studio. This must be done whilst ensuring every room was accurately surveyed, to a high level of detail. Therefore, accuracy was paramount, not only to inform the architectural design, but also for the mechanical and structural engineering team.
Surveying teams conducted measured building and topographical surveys of the historic studios and the surrounding site. This was done through state-of-the-art laser scanning and drone surveying techniques.
Cutting-edge technologies enabled us to deliver a highly accurate and detailed as-built 3D BIM model to the design team. A precise and comprehensive BIM model played a crucial role in supporting the design team. This allowed them to confidently develop their plans and submit designs for planning approval.
THE OUTCOME
In conclusions, Revit and BIM teams delivered a fully detailed 3D Model and 2D CAD drawings on time and within the overall programme requirements. At the time of writing, a planning application for the scheme has been lodged with Westminster council by Stiff + Trevillion.
Spatial Dimensions is honoured to have contributed to this milestone project, showcasing our commitment to precision, innovation, and collaboration in surveying and geospatial services. This project represents an exciting opportunity to preserve the cultural significance of BBC Maida Vale Studios while adapting the site for future use.
