THE IMPORTANCE OF ON-SITE DETECTION AND MARK OUTS FOR YOUR UNDERGROUND UTILITY SURVEY

WHAT IS ON SITE DETECTION?

On-site detection for underground utilities involves the use of various methods to accurately identify and locate underground utility lines. The most common types of surveys are conducted with the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic location surveys (EML).

  • Ground penetrating radar survey – a non-invasive geophysical method used to detect objects and structures below the ground surface. This technology works by emitting high-frequency radar pulses into the ground and recording the reflected signals, which can reveal the presence of underground utilities, voids, or other subsurface features.
  • Electromagnetic location survey – uses electromagnetic induction to help map features beneath the earth’s surface. This is done by alternating electric current through an instrument coil. The materials below the earth’s surface are then mapped based on their response.

Whilst on-site, our underground surveyors use the latest RD8000 scanners which feed real-time data to our screens. These pinpoint accurate scanners allow us to mark the surveyed area there and then, avoiding any discrepancies.

Depending on your specifications we can map the underground features in various ways. These include, but are not limited to; spray paint (semi-permanent or permanent), crayon, chalk or wooden stakes (primarily used in fields). Whatever your spec or terrain, we are here to help!

WHY IS ON-SITE DETECTION IMPORTANT?

On-site detection for underground utilities plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of all projects. By employing on-site detection methods, such as GPR and EML surveys teams can accurately identify the location of underground utilities like pipelines, cables, and sewer lines. This information is vital in preventing accidental damage to these utilities during excavation or construction activities. The access to real-time data from RD8000 scanners means results are sprayed immediately saving you time and money.

Access to immediate results on-site also ensures potential errors are minimised and we’re able to visualise/track pipes meeting inspection chambers on-site. Being sure pipes are tracked correctly means our teams leave the site confident, without the need for returns, keeping your project on time.

This information is vital in preventing accidental damage to these utilities during excavation or construction activities. Striking an underground utility can not only lead to costly repairs and project delays but can also pose serious safety hazards to workers and the public.

By conducting on-site detection, construction teams can work with a clear understanding of where these utilities are located, allowing them to plan their activities accordingly to avoid potential conflicts. This proactive approach helps mitigate risks, minimise disruptions, and ultimately contribute to a smoother and safer construction process.

Overall, on-site detection for underground utilities is essential for maintaining the integrity of existing infrastructure, ensuring project efficiency, and prioritising the safety of both workers and the surrounding community.

HOW CAN ON-SITE DETECTION & MARK OUTS HELP YOU?

  • Real-time results minimising human error and increasing efficiency
  • Saves excavation work cost through intrusive work
  • Meet current legislative requirements
  • Limits hazards and exposure to existing utilities
  • Help clients plan for the future
  • Minimised health and safety risks
  • Saves you time and money

ON SITE DETECTION AT SPATIAL DIMENSIONS

On-site radio detection, alongside ground-penetrating radars, are used daily by our underground utility team

We mobilise quickly and get to the site as soon as possible. This ensures your project gets off to the best start possible. All relevant information is left physically on-site with spray paint, crayon, chalk or other specified methods.

If you come across a pipe, whilst excavating we can attend the site immediately. We will then obtain the direct connection to the asset excavated and have it physically mapped out in minutes with depth.
